The Adorama Flashpoint 180 Monolight is a battery-powered 180-watt strobe made for on-location capturing in the center of nowhere. The kit comes with everything required to give sufficient complete mild for moments or smooth key-light for images, devoid of the take a position, which must can be bought independently. Like most of Adorama’s devices, the Flashpoint 180 Monolight is made with a Bowens install for reflectors, speedrings and other components. Because of its pretty attractive cost tag, I desired to see if the 180 Monolight has what it requires to have a few launches.
- 180 watts
- 48m (150′) Information Number
- 10′ synchronize cable for triggering
- LED modelling light
- 25,000-30,000 pop display pipe life
- Stepless switch down management 5 stops-down
- Bowens reflector mount
- 2.1 lbs without batteries
- Uses two 6,000mAh Sony models NP-F960F battery power packs
- 700 quick flashes per cost with both batteries
The Flashpoint 180 Monolight is included with everything except the torpedo – that is if your torpedo is the mild take a position. Yes, the only product losing is a take a position, but at least Adorama involved the comfortable MP-150S side hold for your associate. There’s also no tripod install involved, so you’ll have to spend in a take a position if you don’t have one relaxing around.
As far as the mild device itself, the Flashpoint 180 is well designed, with an metal primary real estate. The point procedure which allows the mild to point up or down has some serious clamping energy, and never budged once during my work. It comes with a durable metal conventional reflector and white-colored R-210T outdoor umbrella for diffusion. The 180 has a Bowens reflector install, so it’s very flexible with regards to upgraded improvements like elegance recipes and other reflectors.
The MV-AD2 battery energy real estate actions 4 x 4 x 3 in. (10 x 10 x 8 cm) and is about a kilo, but it comes with a video for obtaining to a buckle or other area. I attached it to the small get manage on top of the illumination device, but I think Flashpoint should have included an sufficient increasing area to the illumination device itself, or just designed an assortment bay into the illumination device rather than opt for an exterior package. Often times when I was capturing without a helper, I didn’t remember about battery energy real estate relaxing on the ground and went to slowly shift the mild. Oops! So, an assortment bay included in the 180 Monolight device would be more suitable.
Lastly, the whole kit comes with its own nylon/Velcro bag with detachable taping and neck band. The outdoor umbrella has its own cinching sleeve, and the mild device comes with a transparent nasty dome to guard the display pipe and LED acting mild. This dome also has reasonable calming qualities, and I used it on a few launches. The great thing is that it won’t burn due to the low electricity of the LED. Include a digicam model-specific display induce wire, and the Flashpoint 180 Monolight kit has a lot of mild energy in a situation approximately the dimensions of two lunchtime containers. You’ll have to take your own take a position, of course.
What to Expect
The Flashpoint Monolight 180 is able of outputting, you thought it, 180 h of energy. It provides information number of 48, which implies it can throw useful mild from an optimum of 48 metres, or just over 150 legs. Flash strength is stepless and managed by a switch on the back of the device. Despite its stepless characteristics, the 180 Monolight can really offer five actions of EV obtain or loss. This is not an enormous swath, but can be considerably changed by modifying the range of the mild as it associates to the topic. And if you find that 180 h does not cut it for the kind of photography you do, Adorama provides Flashpoint 400 Monolight kit.
Right off the bat, it became obvious fairly easily that the first Flashpoint 180 Monolight device I obtained from Adorama was faulty. I had used the device for under an time to capture my Kawasaki dust bicycle (see below). It conducted perfectly then, but the down sides ocurred during a proper compensated gig. The gig was only the second time I had ever used the mild. I was capturing an ice bar in the evening in abnormally cool New Britain climate when instantly, the 180 Monolight rejected to flame. After recurring efforts to succeed, I had to depend on hard-wiring my Elinchroms to complete the capture.
The second Flashpoint 180 Monolight device that Adorama sent me proved helpful perfectly. I have not had any issues to time frame. So I think the essential thing to acquire from my encounter is that Adorama was very eager on making sure I had a working item at the end of the day. Yes, I had to depend on Plan B during my capture, but every photographer needs to be ready for the most severe. Perhaps some snowfall made its way within the device, or the excessive cool conducted a part in the first device’s death. Regardless, I have a second device operates incredibly, and that’s all that means something.
If I had a option, I’d update to the Flashpoint 400 Monolight, and I’d get two of them and flame them with the Phottix Odin. This is because I don’t do a lot of images, but rather more item photography and evening moments. As far as battery energy, I was stunned at the Flashpoint 180 Monolight’s Sony models battery energy package combination. I was able to capture all day and not even bother about re-charging since the battery energy provide 700 photos at complete display pipe energy. Again, I just was not insane about having battery energy real estate device divided from the mild device, as it had to be handled whenever I shifted the mild. With an associate, it’s not as big of an offer.
Although the Flashpoint 180 Monolight and I got off on the incorrect feet, I will still keep it in my equipment bag for distant launches in the center of nowhere. There are a lot of things to like about this kit, particularly the bevy of choices and components that are involved, along with its own bag. The Bowens install is a plus. Installation is easy and user-friendly, and this mild would be even better with an online induce like the Phottix Odin. Battery lifespan is great, and mild efficiency is amazing.
The kit’s flaws can mostly be proved helpful around. The outdoor umbrella is inexpensive, the kit does not come with a take a position, an online leading to system must be included via third-party, the modelling mild is poor, and we all know what actually occurred with the first device. But for the price, the Flashpoint 180 Monolight is a reasonable device for the budget-minded photographer.
